Welcome to the podcast where we unpack the tension between ethics, power, and the real-world choices that shape our lives. Today’s episode is called “When Power Forgets Responsibility.”
We’re diving into an age-old problem — what happens when those with power stop feeling accountable to the people their decisions affect?
Let’s ground this in some examples — not to shame, but to learn.
Example 1: Political Leaders
When populist governments concentrate media control and erase dissent, they often justify it as “protecting national interest.” Responsibility is reframed as loyalty, not ethics.
Example 2: Corporate Scandals
Companies that use greenwashing — painting products as sustainable while damaging the planet — exercise market power without environmental accountability.
Example 3: Everyday Workplaces
Even in small offices: a manager taking credit for the team’s work or ignoring harassment complaints. That’s power choosing comfort over conscience.
All of these share one theme — amnesia of consequence. The person in charge stops seeing real outcomes for real people.
And the flip side? Transparency, feedback, and humility rebuilt trust faster than punishment alone ever did.
Three ideas:
Accountability by design. Build systems that make responsibility unavoidable — like public audits or strong whistleblower protections.
Ethical literacy. Teach people in leadership not just how to win, but when not to.
Civic engagement. Demand accountability from institutions that hold power over us.
And personally: we can start small — give feedback honestly, resist apathy, question our own influence.
Because forgetting responsibility doesn’t just happen “up there.” It starts in moments when we stop caring how our choices ripple outward.
When power forgets responsibility, it becomes self-destructive. History’s full of warnings. But it’s also full of redemptions — times when people, institutions, even nations remembered why power matters: not to dominate, but to serve.
Responsibility is what keeps power human.
